Description:-
The climb up Mayar starts with a gentle roll up fire roads, through the forest, and ends up on some nice rocky singletrack at the base of Carrie Fee. The climb up Corrie Fee (at tag1) is a different matter though. It gets really steep, really quickly, and you'll be carrying your bike all the way up (see some of the photos on this trail of us doing exactly that :-)

At Tag2 it gets grassy and a bit boggy, so you'll probably want to just keep pushing/carrying. But at the top of Mayar (which is officially a Munro at 3044ft), you are rewarded with some epic views out the the south.

You then join the Kilbo path at tag3. From here things get quite technical and fast (this is the part of the ride to put a smile on your face). The descent it basically a rocky path, but there are loads of rutted technical bits with large boulders and wheel grabbing holes. It is all ridable but you need to keep the speed up in order to enjoy it (and keeping the speed up is quite brave ;-) Definitely a technically 'hard' one.

Once you get into the trees at tag4 things become a bit tamer. Just good fun singletrack with the or drainage ditch to catch you out.

When we did this ride it was carnage on the bikes (broken brake leaver, punctures, even broken handlebars!), and the rain started, so we didn't actually do the Jock's Road part (but perhaps someone who has ridden it can add some words about it).

Started off in the wrong direction, following the trails that head west from the car park. We soon realised our mistake and made good progress towards Bachnagarin, despite a short diversion. The track... read whole comment...

I have finally ridden this after putting it on the site last year, great day out, some excellent riding. A bit of carrying required at bachnagairn but minimal compared to the riding through the day. ... read whole comment...

Route as found in the Angus Route Cards, i always wondered why it wasn't on here so ive put it on. Time is based on slow going, its 15 miles so climbing accounted for fit and fast riders will blaze through this fairly quickly, if in doubt allow plenty of time.

An addition from a recent ride is from the top by the horse shelter head along the road towards the streak of lightning descent but turn off North when you can to descend to Loch Muick down the Corrie Chash, a really steep blast down a tight single track section, lots of water bars so plenty of chances to hone those rear wheel lifts, its a proper grin fest. I have updated the trial on the map to reflect this descent instead of the standard road one down.

The trail from Cairn Lunkard down Jocks road is not for any old average mountain biker. It has very hard technical sections and others you must walk unless you are Chris Askrigg. It only relents neare... read whole comment...

Description:-
From Clova car park (pay and display, ranger station and toilets) head up Glen Clova past Moulzie , onto a wee rough single track to the east of the burn and over a foot bridge (1).
Follow the rough land rover track for a further 3.5 km till it becomes a push due to the lumpy/rocky road (2). Follow into the woods then its a hike a bike over the two stalkers bridges and up the very good quality stalkers path heading due North(3).
Towards the top of the path it becomes a lot more MTB friendly. There's a wee shelter at Grid Ref NO 256 808 (4)
Follow the rough Land Rover path West North West up toward the munro. A wee word of warning there's a bolder field between you and the top and its a wee bit of a pain lugging a MTB through it. Also be aware in poor visibility its a bit of a featureless couple of summits so map and compass is required.
From Broad Cairn (5) its all plain sailing on great hard single track across the tops right to Fafernie with stunning views. From here stay on the shank down to the legendary Jocks Road. Its a rough path picking its way through peat and moor at the top (7).
Once you have rounded the base of Cairn Lunkard (8) it get fun. Bit tech the odd bog single track drops, boulders, drains and burns. Watch out for walkers as its a popular spot. The descent is well worth it and as you drop down it gets faster and less Tech.
There is a good wee covered shelter (9) down this path and worth a wee look in and from here its even better and faster.
Once in the woods its a flyer all the way to the car park.

Additional option on the Loch Muick Trail, this option descend the Corrie Chash as per description in the other trail. See Description in other trail. Good half day out ride, reasonable fitness required and technical ability of a good red rider would be ideal. This is a good intro to some of the harder trails that Scotland has to offer in terms of natural riding.

Overall comments about Glen Clova

Just a wee pointer on Jocks road. Highly technical riding from Cairn Lunkard down the steeper part of Jocks road which only lets up as it nears the valley floor. The Kilbo path is easy in comparison.... read whole comment...
