The area encompasses 802 square kilometres (310 sq mi) of land primarily in south-west Shropshire. The A49 road and Welsh Marches Railway Line bisects the area north-south, passing through or near Shrewsbury, Church Stretton, Craven Arms and Ludlow.

Within the Shropshire Hills, is the Long Mynd, located near Church Stretton, which covers an area of 5,436 acres (8½ square miles). It peaks at Pole Bank at a height of 516 metres (1,693 feet).

The Long Mynd

Length: 27.8 Miles
Ascent: 1349 m
Time: 5.5 hrs
Tech Grade: Moderate
Fitness Grade: Very Hard
Av. Trail Rating:

Description:-
This trail takes in some of the best climbs and descents that Long Mynd has to offer. It starts with a particularly tough tarmac climb up The Burway (voted number 39 on the list of the top 100 climbs in the UK) but from then on, it is mostly free flowing trail or fast singletrack. Each of the climbs and descents spiral out from Pole Bank, the high point of the ridge (516m; 1,693ft) so you can pick and choose which ones to do if time (or energy) runs short. There are five climbs in total and it will take around 5 hours to complete the entire route, including rest time.

The first descent, into Carding Mill Valley, is quite technical in places and you may also encounter walkers along the way. Thankfully the trail is quite wide and visibility is good along the majority of the descent so this shouldn't be an issue. The descent into Minton Batch (4th Descent) is also listed as a separate trail, above, and a favourite amongst local riders.

Long Mynd is one of my favourite rides in the UK and it has something to offer everyone. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Description:-
This shorter route takes in the descents of Plush Hill and Carding Mill Valley. The route starts with a steep tarmac climb up the Burway and the reward is a very fast grassy descent over the top of the ridge and down the side of Plush Hill. A second climb back to the top of the ridge brings you to Carding Mill Valley which is the highlight of this route: A fast rocky descent with soak-aways and small drop-offs.
