Scar House Reservoir

Length: 21 Miles
Ascent: 782 m
Time: 3 hrs
Tech Grade: Moderate
Fitness Grade: Moderate
Av. Trail Rating:

Description:-
A classic route around Scar House Reservoir ,with some exceptional views over the reservoir . Can be extended by travelling down to Anagram reservoir and traversing the large water pipe if you've got the bottle!
Park on the road opposite the hotel. Don't be tempted to park on the hotel car park . They will ask you move .
Head north on the road and look out for the small road triangle. Take a left and head to the gate and pass through it onto the farm track. Continue on this bridleway as it turns into a grassy track. You will meet the final gate and join a short sharp descent on a rough lane which comes out at the back of the caravan park. Follow the road down to the main road ,and take the road ( and the steep climb) into Lofthouse. Pick up Moor Lane ( byway and not a bridleway as marked on the maps) to the left and follow this along its length to the Scar House Reservoir. The descent is quite rough. Take a left and ride to the dam ,and cross it. Take a left up the track ,and then a right and follow the track that circles the reservoir. Look out for the track on the left which will take you to the tarmac road . Take a left here ,and then right onto the gravel track. This takes you onto to Nidderdale Moor. At the first junction take the right hand lane ,and follow this . Get some speed up to appreciate it to its fullest. . Bear right when you meet up with another track ,and then right again at the next junction. Follow this restricted byway down to the village. There are several gates. At the final gate ( joins tarmac) take a left and follow the tarmac road which becomes a farm track. Follow this along the length of Gouthwaite reservoir. The track becomes tarmac again, passes a pub to the left, and rejoins the road. Take a left and ride down the road back to the hotel. Great route.

Length: 26.6 Miles
Ascent: 918 m
Time: 3.5 hrs
Tech Grade: Easy
Fitness Grade: Moderate
Av. Trail Rating:

Description:-
Mainly easy unsurfaced unclassified road tracks above Lofthouse . Gets a moderate fitness rating due to the first climb out of Lofthouse. Bit of a leg burning , but you will be rewarded with well surfaced tracks that can be ridden at every time of the year ,so making this an ideal winter ride. Can be a bit exposed ,so make sure you carry the right gear for the conditions.

Turn left from the main road ,pass the pub and carry on climbing . It's quite steep. Look out for the well surfaced track on the right. Pass along this through the gate and onto the moor . Take the first right ( pile of stones) and descend until you pass over a bridge ,and then turn left approx. 200 ms after the bridge. Follow the well surfaced track back to the main track and take a right . Continue along this until you meet up with a track that veers to the left . Follow this to the Hamlet of Irton . Join the tarmac road and follow it round to Bramley Grange and look for the Bridleway at Blackhill Ho . Follow this to Foulgate Farm . Turn right back onto the unclassified road and rejoin the moor . Look out for the track on your left ,and follow this to the road and turn right . Look out for the track at Bagwith Ho ( on your right) and take the track to the road . Turn left and approx. 50m's is the track on the right. Take this UCR. It can get a bit muddy in places and there two fords to cross . This track becomes tarmac. Follow its end . Carry on at the road and turn right. Follow the road ahead and take the right fork and follow this road it becomes a bridleway after approx. 200 ms. Follow the bridleway round and meet up with the tarmac track and turn left. Follow this track ( bear left at the road junction) until you meet up with the Restricted Byway that drops into Bouthwaite. Join the road ,take a right onto the Lofthouse road and return to your starting place .
