Route still blocked by loads of fallen trees so involved some hike-a-bike and missed out a large portion of the singletrack down towards Loch Venachar. Diversion on the cycle route back due to fores... read whole comment...

Loads of windthrown trees blocking the route from around GR 577045, as at Feb 2015. Easy enough to cross the clear-felled area toward Loch V, but not sure how much of the singletrack you miss out.

I rode this route for the first time for about twenty years recently (we used to do it a lot before the development of trail centres). It's potentially quite a wet route as others have mentioned but I... read whole comment...

It's an utter washout when it has been raining...but when dry the ride over the hills and descent down is great fun. Climb up from Aberfoyle is a rather featureless fireroad until you get to the end o... read whole comment...

Description:-
Start from the carpark and head straight up the hill! Follow the main forest road and bear left at first junction, then take right hand forest road (signposted) and continue up on the road.

After approx 1/2 KM you will cross a river and this is where the singletrack starts. You cant really go wrong until you get to the small fishing loch at 3). keep your eyes peeled as you go down the forest road for a small path on the left this will take you down some techy singletrack to the road at loch venechar. If you miss this small path don't worry you can come down the forest road to the loch as well.

Once there you can pop down the road to callendar for a pint and a pie, then return to this position or turn left and head west down the road. You will soon get to a small trail that skirts the loch then you will come to the forest drive. for now it is a bit of slog following that forest road up, up and up! But it doesn't need any great navigational skills. You should without too much trouble be able to reach the top, and reach a good pace coming back down into the trail system (great ape etc) at the David Marshall lodge (DML). Once there - head back along the trail beside the golf course and you'll be back at the car in no-time.

you can easily play about near the DML for a few hours, there are loads of small tracks to explore down there, and indeed go into aberfoyle for a refreshment etc.

Description:-
This is not strictly a MTB route, being all on tarmac, but much of it is on traffic-free roads. I recommend stopping at Stronachlachar Pier Cafe for a scone, after which is 18km of mostly downhill / flat. If starting at Aberfoyle Wool Centre (loads of free parking there) as I did, then the long climb up Dukes Pass is out of the way first (took me about 30 minutes to the top, although people with road-bikes could do it much quicker). A lovely and very popular route around the loch with beautiful views.

Overall comments about Aberfoyle

Aberfoyle has some great wee hidden gems of singletrack littered across the whole area, but it also has plenty of boring, featureless fireroad to connect them all. It is a good area for biking though ... read whole comment...
