No. of Trails: 3
Facilities:
Car Park
Toilets
Cafe
Location:-
The main riding is located just north of Crickhowell. (Some easy parking available just over the bridge on the Llangattock side of the river Usk). Alternatives are to start from Llanthony Priory (free car park, toilets and the best beer garden in the UK) or from Talgarth in the north west.

Click here to see a detailed map and information about any additional locations.
Description:-
A series of north/south ridges define the area and whilst few of these ridges are technically not legal trails (or footpaths for that matter) most have been ridden by pony trekkers for many years. Some have been trashed by the MX brigade.

If you wish to stay completely legal there are plenty of bridleways to choose from.

Length: 23 Miles

Time: 5 hrs
Tech Grade: Hard
Fitness Grade: Moderate

Description:-
A long day out that crosses two of the valley ridges. Two short hike-a-bike sections and a long fire road climb lead to a classic descent.

Starting from the free car park at the Priory a gentle warm up on the fire road leads to a short hard push up the BW. The first descent starts smooth, but soon becomes a moderate rock garden - watch out for the gate near the bottom.

A long fire road climb and a short hike-a-bike eventually leads you to the top of the ridge, where sandy sections are interspersed with bogs and a chance to play puddle pot luck. The long final descent is the classic of the Black mountains topped off with an off camber corner and a rock garden finale.

An optional swift half in the Red Lion is followed by a road section and then a long climb back up to the ridge. A gentle climb leads to the final technical descent. This has a hard rocky section and a steep exit onto the fire road. (Note that it is possible to avoid this section - and shorten the route - by descending the starting BW).

Please do not ride this route. I'm all for a bit of cheeky riding , but this is just stupid. You're riding one of the most popular walking routes in the valley. There are better routes in the valley a... read whole comment...

Description:-
Leave from Llanthony Abbey car park, ride along the road to the lane at Maes-y-beran Farm, ride down the lane and start the ride/walk up. Follow the path up to the top then head left till you reach the summit. I'm still trying to find a slightly less steep route down but at the moment I'm halting at the top having a bite to eat and then turning around riding back the way I came. then drop back down to the Druid Stone wall and follow the path along to your right..
