Update on trail conditions as of Sept. 2012. The route is mostly on tracks with lots of loose rock, which make the trail quite hard work. The climb up to Cooks cairn is on an indistinct and peaty slope and it's just as quick to walk. There is also not much of a reward for your efforts here as the summit is very flat, with the only feature being the small cairn. The track erosion from the col below Cooks cairn to the Black Water has filled in some of the bike swallowing holes mentioned in the original description. As with pretty much all the descents on this route the loose rocky surface means that you need at keep your speed under control, but it's easy enough to pick a line on this descent now. Despite one of the wettest summers on record I was able to get around without getting my feet wet. The first crossing of the Black Water was rideable and on the others there were enough large rocks just downstream from the track to be able to step across (using the bike as a crutch).

Good remote XC route. The challenge is all about fitness rather than technical skills and the rewards come from the scenery, rather than the trail, which is rarely technical or smooth enough to be really fun. But you can get out into some properly remote mountain scenery in half a day. I rode the route on a beautiful sunny and still Autumn day and didn't see a soul for over four hours.

Landy track all the way round this shooting estate. A big ride with some hard climbing and beautiful scenery. A number of river crossings along the way but all rideable. Good but no singletrack or faster sections.

Rating of my own trail entry. It's a good, tough day/half-day of riding that'll test your climbing ability and endurance. Doesn't get a higher rating though as there's maybe just too much land-rover track. The track erosion I encountered also limited the speed you could safely gather on the long downhill bits.
